The Salton Sea, California.  (2015 - )

The desert landscape of California’s Salton Sea calls to me, again and again. A nearly abandoned realm of contaminated water and empty beaches, this inland lake bears witness to human intention, intervention, failure, and tenacity.

I am drawn to the paradoxes of this place, so entrenched in hope and despair. Town streets generate the illusion of emptiness yet emanate a sense of presence. Time itself seems to stand still, placing me in neither the past, the present, nor the future. I am suspended between memories and dreams, glimpsing reflections of myself everywhere.

In this barren landscape I am fed. The Salton Sea summons my ghosts and, by some miracle, has allowed us to work together. It is my siren song.
